The NMAHM® & Reported Benefits

..... reported personal benefits of the Neuromuscular Approach to Human Movement (NMAHM)®

Feedback from students and clients/ patients indicates many beneficial effects of changing from habitual movement style to that advocated by the NMAHM® . This appears to be true in relation to generalised movement activity, specialised areas of movement practice e.g. manual handling, exercise and across the preventive – educative – re-educative – rehabilitation – therapeutic – case management spectrum.

The general, most frequently reported points include:

  • non-judgemental/non-critical ways for letting me find out (my) habitual movement pattern – and just what I was causing/costing myself – aches, pains, tensions, drawdown of general health and well-being too
  • having been offered a valid and relevant alternative to my normal practice, and encouraged (and allowed!) to test/find out immediate differences in effects between movement styles
  • being allowed various options and opportunities e.g.:
  • whether to continue to move in my ‘normal' way – or to do something different – and have the opportunity to experiment (compare and contrast) and find out which really best suits my (personal health; legal and professional/occupational etc) needs
  • choice - to engage in a movement/manual handling/ exercise at a given time/ in a given way – or to know that I need to pull back – and it's ok for me to do so

And Personal Statements/Testimonies include

"focusing my personal safety upon me rather than just ticking the legislation/risk assessment boxes for my work "

"when something like this exists – why are we still asked to do other things which hurt (me), disadvantage (my) patients/clients, etc"

"just what have we been asking our students to do – and why" ?!!!?

"I feel much less tense/sore/stressed"

"to identify any difficulty/problems in order to work out another – and better - option – win-win"

"how efficient (yep – that's an intended pun): from the NMAHM® I now have ways of identifying where I am carrying tissue adaptation within me – and the same methods can help me either simply monitor – and/or begin to clear it"

"more relaxed, less pain"

"sleeping better"

"resting and recovering better after I have … (been gardening, done some DIY, driven; exercised; worked; been at the computer etc etc)"

"I now know more about what I can do for myself (both stopping aches, pains etc happening, and doing something positive about them when/if they occur)"

"I don't worry so much if my symptoms begin to be more noticeable; i know and understand much more about the processes"

"defined health benefits – (huge variety of reported effects e.g.) assistance with prevention of musculoskeletal aches and pains; headaches/migraines; digestive disorders; menstrual cycle changes; breathing symptoms and patterns"

I can support myself better between treatments/therapy maintenance visits"

"I can reduce the frequency of medication/prescription charges, (and/ or) therapy/ maintenance visits - easier on the wallet/purse"

"(with patients/ clients, service-users): less stressful, more kind, caring and respectful for the person, for each of us (carer & client)"

"seems to facilitate the best sequencing of muscle activity/co-ordination in the client – they contribute, and it is less effort for both of us"

"more aware what I can actually do to improve the care quality (and/or handling experience) for my clients/ patients/ service-users"

"it seems to facilitate the best sequence of muscle activity to assist me when I move"

"know better how to engage my core/core muscles dynamically"

"sporting/ leisure activities: can ‘work' with my animals better - e.g. dog training, horse-riding – less angst, more kind, caring and respectful for each of us"

"need fewer strokes to swim the length of the pool"

"have improved my personal best in running – and reduced the energy cost"

"the golf handicap is down/the length achieved by the stroke is up – and less achey/tired too"

"able to monitor effects of other aspects of health and make choices with regard to whether action requires to be taken"

"able to monitor effects of other aspects of life-style – diet (food choice), exercises (which to engage with, which don't suit, which need to be modified – and how), footwear etc (which throws my general or my local muscle balance, and which supports either/both)"

There are many other opportunities and benefits that have been at least occasionally reported.

Each/all reported benefits are checked to verify and validate association of reported effects with NMAHM® practices.

Despite the list given above, the NMAHM® and its Conditioning is neither promoted or regarded as being a total panacea, nor a substitute for medical etc care where indicated.
