Lesley Crozier MCSP DipTP, MHPCR, Assoc. of Institute of Biology

Lesley is both one of the originators and a current co-developer of the NMA/NMAHM®.

She qualified and worked as a Chartered Physiotherapist gaining relevant professional experience by working in the NHS across all rotations.

She also worked in private practice specialising in preventive therapy and movement re-education, and continues to do so.

Much of her time in private practice was in tandem with teaching physiotherapy at diploma and undergraduate level at Glasgow Royal Infirmary School of Physiotherapy, the Queen's College Glasgow and within the College within its various preparatory phases in its evolution as part of Glasgow Caledonian University.

While at Glasgow Royal she met with John Vasey who introduced her to T McClurg Anderson's system – Human Kinetics within clinical physiotherapy practice.

From initial interest in the innovative methods he introduced her to and in response to the degree of effectiveness that these methods evidenced they began to debate and review contemporary physiotherapy practice, and other practices which he had previously taught. They began to develop the NMA to take account of concerns identified, and offer positive action with regard to some elements of both physiotherapeutic and kinetic practices.

Sheila Cozens BSc(Hons), MCSP, MHPCR, Lic Ac, Cert Ed, AssocMember ICAK(UK), Certificated Coach (Personal/ Life; Corporate & Executive)

Following qualification as a Chartered Physiotherapist she gained relevant basic experience by working in NHS across all rotations, and progressed through the clinical route working in Senior posts on ITU/Surgical, orthopaedics and out-patients.

In parallel with such processes she also began to specialise in Sports Physiotherapy, eventually becoming Honorary Physiotherapist to the British Judo Association (in particular with the Women's squad).

Within the Out-patients arena she instigated one of the first direct GP referral services into physiotherapy, and developed various areas of clinical speciality (Mobilisations/ Manipulations requiring MACP Basic and Advanced Spinal qualifications; study and practical knowledge of the McKenzie Approach; running a Back-school within the Hospital; provision of training in back-care for staff which generally extended to include lifting and handling).

However within such posts it became clear to her that the overall effectiveness of local and national physiotherapy practice particularly in relation to patients with chronic and complex needs was limited.

This caused a personal/ professional search to be instigated, and since initial qualification as a healthcare professional Sheila has continued her personal and professional development via study of specific physiotherapy modalities, various complementary therapies and systems of healthcare.

Skills and services drawn from the above have created a specialised focus:

  • in the general relationship between movement and its effects upon the organisation and functioning of body systems, and consequently upon health and well-being;

  • as well as how the organisation and function of different body system influences muscle activity and movement capacity, with particularly interest in preventive and re-educative measures.
Increasingly she has realised the power of movement as a direct intervention in health.
